An Integrated Leadership Development Program for Leaders at All Levels

The most effective learning occurs in the act of leadership, and thus this program develops new ways of thinking and behaving in the daily context of your work. The guidance for this program is conducted remotely with hands-on practice for you to apply at work every day.

Leadership is collective, it only exists in the presence and service of others. This program integrates leaders in small cohorts of peers to learn, practice and grow together with daily personal reflection and weekly cohort interaction. Cohorts are professionally guided by a licensed leadership coach and include 1:1 coaching. Pulse assessments and feedback are woven throughout the program to develop awareness related to a leader’s mindset and behaviors, to establish a reflective practice, and to improve the leader’s effectiveness over time.

This program has proven effective on a global scale for almost a decade with both public cross-organizational leadership and private leaders from the same organization. Feedback from past participants is routinely incorporated into the program in order to continue to deliver the highest value to the next cohorts of participating leaders.

The program is available publicly with global cohorts of leaders from a variety of companies. In addition, Applied Agility in Leadership™ may be offered privately in single organization cohorts and may be customized to integrate and align with corporate leadership development goals.

Both public and private programs may be customized to include optional enhancements including:

Why is Agile Leadership Important?

Organizations are human systems; organizations will not transform unless the leaders within them transform. Agile leadership is a journey to become a better leader — to transform yourself and, by extension, your organization.

Agile leadership is an active, reflective practice to become more self-aware, curious, humble, and adaptive to improve stakeholder relationships and business outcomes. Agile leaders are more effective leaders.

Change is the only constant in today’s organizational life yet negatively disrupts each of us instinctually. Human brains are hard-wired to react defensively to change. Agile leadership disrupts this reactive process to create and foster positive impact.

This leadership development program guides participants in developing competencies of their self-awareness, situational adaptiveness, and organizational effectiveness.

Developing Agility in Leadership

This program integrates individual leadership growth areas with proven agility techniques to improve self-awareness, manage emotional threats, and demonstrate a more balanced power style with increased curiosity and humility.

Participants focus their practice based on their specific goals. The program provides the framework and tools needed to foster the leader’s growth. The cohort provides a safe space to learn and grow. The professional coach provides insight and challenges participants to focus, practice, experiment, reflect, and share. It is through this co-creative engagement that leaders truly begin to expose and explore their potential.

Five Key Leadership Development Program Objectives

Improved Awareness & Adaptiveness

Improve real-time self-awareness enabling situational adaptiveness to improve creativity, decision making, engagement, behaviors, and overall effectiveness in leading others.

Broader Strategic Orientation

Enhance strategic focus to improve influence across a broader perspective of individual expertise, team performance and results, cross-departmental alignment, and organizational culture and health.

Balanced Presence & Power

Balance power and presence with teams and stakeholders to enhance relationships through humility and openness while holding strength of conviction and direction.

Catalyst Engagement Competency

Engage, challenge, coach, and empower team members to enhance their self-awareness, balance their presence, and improve their effectiveness as employees and leaders.

Coping with Uncertainty & Change

Build resiliency to effectively respond (rather than defensively react) to common work threats driven by status and relationships, uncertainty and change, lack of autonomy and alignment, and more.

How Do Participants Engage in this Leadership Development Program?

Professional One-on-One Coaching

Participants engage with an ALJ Guide in one-on-one coaching with a focus  on enhancing self-awareness, managing emotional threats, balancing their power style with increased curiosity and humility, and developing more effective catalyst habits.

Participants focus their practice based on their specific goals. The professional coach provides insight and challenges participants to focus, practice, experiment, reflect, and share. It is through this co-creative engagement that leaders truly begin to expose and explore their own leadership potential.

Peer Cohort Engagement

Cohorts are small teams of five to eight leaders and become the fundamental building block to share in learning, practice, and growth through the course of the leadership development program. The practice cohort provides a safe space for experimentation, peer-coaching, practice and reflection. We grow better together.

Each cohort is professionally facilitated by one of our experienced Agile Leadership Journey Guides. Public program cohorts are curated to diversify participants as much as possible including industry, gender, geography, and culture. Private program cohorts combine leaders from the same company with a shared ecosystem and context.

Cohort teams are on a shared journey, helping and guiding each other as challenges surface, just as a hiking party supports each other on a difficult mountain trek.

Program Structure

This leadership development program is segmented into two courses and each one involves dedicating three-months (twelve-weeks) to immersive learning, application, and practice. Public programs typically start twice a year, in March and September.

Curriculum is broken into interactive, structured 90-minute weekly cohort learning sessions. Each week includes education, practice, sharing, and reflection designed for participants to explore and develop their capacity as leaders. Cohort meeting sessions are scheduled based on Guide availability and alignment with participant preferences at the onset of each course.

Monthly global sessions for public programs enhance learning through expert sharing, discussion panels, and participant stories. These sessions provide opportunities for leaders across roles, industries, and continents to engage with each other and our facilitators in shared learning. Additionally, these sessions continue to be available to alumni of our Applied Agility programs on an ongoing basis, supporting leaders as their journeys continue beyond the completion of their coursework.

Applied Agility in Leadership: Developing a Growth Mindset

Course Focus and Learning

A Growth Mindset Journey

Participants kick off the program with a one-on-one coaching session with their licensed ALJ Guide, meeting their cohort of peers, exploring their immunity to change, and creating a personal leadership growth goal to take them beyond their current leadership context. They prepare for their journey ahead of more self-awareness, real-time choices, and reflections to learn and grow.

Expert Mindset

Participants explore the difference between expertise and an expert mindset, and how that shapes their impact as a leader. They discover areas that require letting go and areas requiring grabbing on in order to shape an improved leadership profile. They reflect on other experts they work with and how their mindset shapes those relationships and their results.

Achiever Mindset

Participants explore the fine line between influence and manipulation as they learn the value of alignment alongside the challenge of groupthink. They learn how to broaden their gaze from the details of work toward coordinating that work and the strategy shaping the focus of that work. They navigate the stakeholder landscape of authority and politics to focus on performance and results.

Catalyst Mindset

Participants explore the boundaries where patience becomes stagnant, openness becomes uncertain, and empowerment becomes indecision. They learn that a true catalyst mindset is an alert and active mindset requiring courage, choice, and reflection. They begin to open their own mind to new possibilities, more diverse perspectives, and a more co-creative culture.

A Growth Mindset Checkpoint

Participants reflect on their journey. For those continuing onto the Developing Catalyst Behaviors Program, this step is a checkpoint reflection from their initial goals to where they feel they currently are today. For those completing their journey, they develop a change story to share with their cohort, peers, and manager (when appropriate).

Applied Agility in Leadership: Developing Catalyst Behaviors

Course Focus and Learning

A Catalyst Growth Journey

Participants kick off the program with a one-on-one coaching session with their licensed ALJ Guide, meeting their cohort of peers, and exploring their role as a leader and how a more catalyst approach might offer areas for improvement. They prepare for their journey ahead of more self-awareness, real-time choices, and reflections to learn and grow.

Leadership Power & Presence

Participants explore their leadership power, the power through relationships, and how their power influences their presence as a leader. They learn how to situationally adjust their power balance to improve their effectiveness at work. Finally, they practice rebalancing power “in the room” for more effective teams, projects, and meetings.

Stakeholder Engagement

Participants discover how to make every conversation and decision better through a catalyst technique called Catalyst Conversations™. They learn the triggers that invoke threats and rewards in others and how to navigate dialogue to foster alignment and improve their influence, especially when dealing with differences, conflict, and feedback.

Leadership Focus

Participants explore the focus of leadership across three key domains: the work to be done, the people doing the work, and coordinating across them. Participants learn to inventory and rebalance their focus to improve their leadership effectiveness and grow others in the organization. Finally, they apply their learning in coaching and catalyzing others to improve their own leadership focus.

A Catalyst Behaviors Checkpoint

Participants reflect on their journey and develop a change story to share with their cohort, peers, and manager (when appropriate).
